Chinos vs Jeans: Which to Wear, and When
Chinos vs jeans is a choice most men make by habit, grabbing whichever pair is nearest the door. The difference that actually matters is the cloth. Chinos are a smooth cotton twill, usually in a colour, and they sit one step smarter than denim. Jeans keep a weekend feel however dark the wash. We carry both from Bruhl, Meyer, Mac and Remus Uomo in the Westbourne shop, and most of the men who come in own a pair of each.
At a glance
- Chinos for a Friday at the office, a family lunch or anything with a blazer.
- Dark jeans for almost everything else, a dinner out included.
- Brown suede, loafers and Chelsea boots suit chinos best.
- Fine cords take over once November sets in.
- A little stretch in the cloth makes the biggest difference to comfort.

Chinos vs jeans: what separates them
Denim is a twill too, which surprises people. The difference is in the dye. On denim the lengthways threads are indigo and the crossways ones are left white, so jeans fade along the seams and at the knee as they are worn. Chino cloth is dyed right through. The colour stays even, and the surface looks flat and clean for years.
Then there is the cut. A classic chino has slanted side pockets and a plain front, closer to a suit trouser than to anything you would wear to dig the garden. Jeans have the five-pocket shape, coin pocket and all. Plenty of what we sell now sits between the two. The Meyer M5 and the Mac Arne are cut with five pockets in cloth that is not denim, so they pass for jeans across a room and feel noticeably smarter up close.
When to wear which
The occasion settles most of it.
- A Friday at the office, a client lunch, a christening: chinos, a shirt, and a blazer if you have one.
- Shopping in town, the pub, a walk along the cliff top: jeans.
- Dinner out: dark jeans with a proper shirt and leather shoes, or chinos where the restaurant leans formal.
Dark denim covers more ground than most men expect. The Meyer M5 9-6288 comes in an overdyed dark blue that will not fade at the seams, with 2% elastane for stretch. Add a navy crew neck and brown boots and it goes most places a chino would. Lighter washes are a different matter. Keep those for the weekend.
Chinos come into their own with a jacket on top. A blazer over jeans can look as if half the outfit got dressed for a different day, while stone, navy or gold chinos sit under a tweed or navy jacket without any effort at all.
What shoes to wear with chinos
Shoes set the tone for chinos more than anything above the belt. Brown suede is the easiest place to start, because it softens the clean line of the cloth without making it scruffy.
- Brown suede brogues or desert boots, with stone, navy or gold
- Loafers, with a dark sock now and bare ankles in summer
- Brown leather Chelsea boots through autumn and winter
- Plain leather trainers on a T-shirt day
Black lace-up oxfords are the one pairing to avoid. They look stiff against a casual cotton, and the contrast is worst with lighter colours. Our footwear runs from Bugatti and Azor to John White, and the boots are where to look for a Chelsea.
Cords for the colder months
When the wind comes in off the bay in November, cord is warmer than either. The ribs trap air, and a fine needlecord still looks tidy enough for a shirt and knit.
The Mac Arne is the one we would point you to first. It is a fine cord with 2% elastane, cut slim with a moderate rise and five pockets, in a warm golden terra and a deep mahogany brown. Both colours sit well with navy, cream and green on top. A chunky jumbo cord makes a bolder statement, but the fine rib is the one you will reach for twice a week.
Getting the fit right
Whichever you choose, the waist and leg length decide whether a pair gets worn. Our trouser fit guide goes through rise and length in detail. Three checks cover most of it.
- Sit down in them. A waist that is fine standing and digs in sitting is a size too small.
- Check the hem with the shoes you will wear. A slight break on the shoe is the aim.
- Look for some elastane. Two per cent is enough to make a long day noticeably easier.
Bruhl and Meyer both cut in short, regular and long legs, so there is no need to roll anything up. The Bruhl and Meyer ranges are on the shop floor at 30 Seamoor Road, Westbourne, alongside our jeans. Bring the shoes and we will check the length on you.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between chinos and jeans?
Both are cotton twill, but they are dyed differently. Denim has indigo threads running lengthways and white threads across, which is why jeans fade at the seams and knees. Chino cloth is dyed all the way through, so it keeps an even colour and a smooth, flat surface. Chinos usually have slanted side pockets and a plain front, while jeans have the five-pocket shape. The result is that chinos read as smarter and jeans as more casual.
Are chinos smarter than jeans?
Generally, yes. The smooth cloth and plain front put chinos one step up from denim, which is why they sit so easily under a blazer. Dark, unfaded jeans close most of that gap, and with a good shirt and leather shoes they are fine for a dinner out or a relaxed office. Light or faded washes stay firmly casual. If a dress code says smart casual and you are unsure, chinos are the safer choice.
What shoes go with chinos?
Brown suede brogues and desert boots are the easiest match, because suede softens the clean line of the cloth. Loafers work all year, with a dark sock in winter. Brown leather Chelsea boots suit chinos from autumn onwards, and plain leather trainers keep them relaxed on a T-shirt day. The one pairing to avoid is a black formal oxford, which looks stiff against casual cotton, especially with light colours like stone or gold.
Can you wear jeans for smart casual?
Dark jeans, yes, in most places. Choose a deep indigo or overdyed wash with no fading or rips, and pair it with a collared shirt or a fine knit and leather shoes or boots. That combination works for a meal out, a casual office or a weekend party. Where the invitation leans towards the formal end of smart casual, or you will be wearing a blazer, chinos usually look more at home.
